The New Generation of Communication – Meetings in Virtual Reality

Remote meetings are nothing new for companies of every size. Decentralized teams distributed throughout multiple locations or in home offices as well as contact to important suppliers and customers require efficient communication solutions. Remote meetings allow for a quick execution; business trips can be reduced, which in turn saves time and money.

The old friend: Telephone conference

Telephone conferences are quickly set up and do not require any special hardware. That makes them particularly popular for ad-hoc alignments. Telephone conferences are ideal for shorter status update meetings. Longer telephone conferences, however, should be avoided, because exhaustion may result rapidly and participants take a passive approach in a telephone conference with multiple people.

The established method: Video conference

The advantage of a video conference is that the business partners can see each other, which brings it closer to a personal contact than a telephone conversation. However, it should not be forgotten that a majority of the facial expression and body language is lost. Just like telephone conferences, video conferences can be used for status updates. Furthermore, the sharing of screen contents also allows for the sharing of additional information. Only restricted interaction is possible, which is why video conferences are more suitable for less complex topics.

The new generation: Virtual reality conference

The next generation in the communication between decentralized teams is virtual reality. Through VR, it is possible to dive completely into a virtual space to communicate with colleagues, business partners and customers – and to do so as if everyone is really on site. Virtual reality extends the possibilities of application for remote meetings, because interactive tools can be used to perform problem-solving and innovation workshops.

Be in the middle of the action

A significant advantage of the VR conference compared to a telephone or video conference is the high engagement achieved through complete immersion. While there is normally passive body language during conventional remote meetings, you can move freely in a VR conference. You put on the VR headset and are in a shared virtual space with your business partners and right in the middle of everything. This fact alone leads to increased interaction within the meeting.

The best visualization

Virtual whiteboards can be written on with a virtual marker and equipped with virtual post-it notes. Graphics and PDF files can be imported at any time. Even 3D objects can be placed in the room via drag & drop. The integrated microphone can be used to record voice messages and converted into visible text notes. Drawing in 3D offers a completely new experience. Simply select a color, place the imaginary marker somewhere in the room and draw. This opens up new possibilities of collaboration.

The future is virtual

Virtual reality makes an old dream of humanity come true. It is finally possible to teleport yourself to another place immediately – at least visually. That is why scientists believe that virtual reality will be the last medium created by humans. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen. One thing is clear: VR is now at such a high level that companies can already use the technology productively and to their advantage. VR conferences are an excellent way to discover the technology without any risks. Countless areas of application are to follow.
